Mixed up COLORS and some of my favorites

When kids connect visual clues with words a whole new world opens up for them. Toddlers love repetition and teaching kids about color is no exception. Below are some of my favorite color related teaching tools?

My favorite color books

BrownBear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
by Bill Martin Jr. (Author), Eric Carle
Mouse Paint Paperback
by Ellen Stoll Walsh
A Color of His Own
by Leo Lionni and Teresa Mlawer

My favorite color game

I Spy

Say to child "I spy with my little eye something that is red."
Child guesses the object.  Is it the red apple?  Is it the red pen?

My favorite color grouping activities

GREEN

BLUE

YELLOW
ORANGE
Give kids colored baskets, bowls or a gift bag - doesn’t really matter which. Let them collect things around the house or in the fridge. Alternatively, you can have things out on the kitchen table ready for them to sort. It is quite satisfying to collect and sort.

Cut out color specific things from old toy catalogs or magazines and group items by color onto paper with glue stick or put loose into plastic paper sleeves so child can see them grouped.

My Favorite hands on color mixing

1. Using Finger paint with a little added dish washing liquid for easier clean up. Combine colors mixing Yellow + Red = Orange; Blue + Red= Purple; Blue + Yellow = Green

2. Milk and food color mixing.  Pour milk into a white plate or bowl.  Add primary colors or any colors you  like Give child a tooth pick and let them stir colors together in milk.

FOOD COLORING

Pour Milk in dish or bowl

ADD FOOD COLORING INTO MILK THEN STIR WITH TOOTH PICK. OH SO COLORFUL!

“Ow, ow, OW! On my ear you are!” - Yoda

I was surfing the web and came upon these amazingly cool Yoda ears pattern & directions. Blogger gives permission to post as long as credit is given where credit it due.
Thanks for sharing Jane!
You have made me and many young Yoda lovers very happy!

How to make your own Yoda ears!

You will need :
8" x 11" piece of green felt
8" x 11" piece of paper
Scissors
2 green pipe cleaners
Fabric glue
Stapler
Staples
1 writing utensil

Ttake your piece of paper.

Fold it in half.

Draw the shape below, and cut it out.

Take the cut out, which looks like an over sized sperm and put it aside.

Take your piece of green felt.

Fold it in half.

Take your cut out, place it on top the folded piece of felt, and cut out the shape of the sperm from your felt.

Now you have two green sperm!

Cut an “x” out of the middle.

Just big enough to fit your ear through.

Notice how the ears just hang limp?

That’s what the pipe cleaners are for!

Curl the pipe cleaners around the ear holes, with the excess pipe cleaner running along the middle of the “sperm’s tail”. One cleaner per sperm.

Use the fabric glue to stick the shaped pipe cleaner to the green felt.

Let it dry.

When that doesn’t work, or you get tired of waiting, use your stapler and staples to staple the pipe cleaner to the green felt.

Now your ears will stay up

And you can bend and shape them however you want.

"Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?" - Yoda

These Yoda paintings are easy and fun for toddlers and older kids as well. We used green paint with a little bit of dish wash liquid added to paint. Makes clean up easy. Also makes washing hands magical. soap suds with out added liquid soap. Googly eyes put directly on paint when it is wet... no glue needed. No paintbrushes, just fingers and a hand print.

I like the quote from Yoda, an empowering message for any age.
